A Small Love Song

My sadness was a heavy stone
That only you could lift
My life a ragged shirt
Turned inside out
You patched the holes
And helped me
Get the sleeves on right
My heart an empty husk
Discarded on the road
You picked it up
And filled it with your kindness
My song a lifeless dirge
You placed my head
Against your breast
And hummed a comparsita
Rocking me to
The rhythm of your heartbeat
The cadence of your breath
